Downlands Achieves Landmark Accreditation

For rural families, choosing the right boarding school is a decision built on trust and the promise of a nurturing environment. At Downlands College, we are humbled to have earned the trust of so many families through our commitment to holistic care.

Recently, we achieved full accreditation under the Australian Boarding Standards Association (ABSA), becoming the only coeducational school in Australasia — and the third school nationwide — to do so.

This landmark recognition is not just a reflection of our school’s robust policies and facilities; it represents the heart and soul of Downlands itself.

What Does This Accreditation Mean?

Achieving this accreditation was no small task — it was the result of a rigorous three-year process that included detailed compliance measures and the adoption of best practices. The standards reflect every aspect of boarding life, from safety and mental health to social connection and academic support, ensuring the most comprehensive care for our students.

Ian Bulkin, Head of Boarding, reflected on the journey: "This was an intense and rewarding process. It allowed us to reflect on and strengthen every aspect of what we do, from meeting the expectations of parents to implementing the latest research on the well-being of teenagers. Our staff rose to the occasion with incredible dedication."

"For families, this achievement means peace of mind. It assures parents that their children are cared for in a nurturing environment shaped by Downlands College's MSC values in all areas of life."

A Place for Spiritual Growth and Self-Discovery

At Downlands College, we are guided by our MSC (Missionaries of the Sacred Heart) ethos, a foundation that places spiritual well-being and personal growth at the heart of everything we do. We strive to create a community where students feel valued, supported, and connected to something greater than themselves helping students grow into compassionate, well-rounded individuals who are prepared to thrive in all aspects of life.

Catering to All Career Pathways

Education at Downlands College is not limited to academic achievement. While we are proud of our students’ academic excellence, we also take great care to cater to a wide range of post-school pathways. Whether a student is passionate about trades, agriculture, creative arts, technology, entrepreneurship, or any other field, we provide opportunities to explore and develop those interests.

We are a Home Away From Home

Downlands is home to 212 boarders from diverse regions, ranging from Dalby to Chinchilla to Cooktown, Darwin, Papua New Guinea, and Malaysia. Our boarding houses are designed to meet the developmental and social needs of students from Years 7 to 12, creating a welcoming and nurturing environment.

We celebrate diversity, with each student bringing their own unique perspective and experiences to our community. This inclusive environment helps students learn the value of mutual respect and fosters deep connections. "We want every student to feel seen, heard, and cared for," says Ian Bulkin. "This isn’t just a school; it’s a second family."

A Coeducational Experience Keeping Families Together

For families with both sons and daughters, Downlands offers the unique benefit of a coeducational boarding experience. This allows siblings to stay together in one supportive environment, fostering closer relationships and making life easier for parents.

A Team Committed to Your Child

Downlands’ professional boarding staff are extensively trained in teenage psychology, pastoral care, and academic support, ensuring every student’s needs are met. From sports to coding, theatre to cattle work, our wide range of programs allows students to discover and pursue their passions.
