Learning, Leadership, and Growth Beyond the Field

The SANIX Rugby World Cup: Supporting our student athletes on tour

In a matter of weeks, the Downlands College Rugby First XV will represent Australia at the 2026 SANIX World Rugby Youth Tournament in Japan—an exclusive opportunity offered only to one school per country. This tournament allows our students to compete at an international level, embrace new experiences, and grow both as athletes and individuals.

First XV Coach Mr Domenico Cullen shares, “The Downlands College Rugby program is unlike any other. We approach the season differently, seeking strong competition and opportunities for learning—both in Australia and around the world. Playing in the SANIX tournament is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for our boys, and we are committed to helping them succeed in rugby and in their studies.”

“Representing Australia at the SANIX World Rugby Youth Tournament is an outstanding achievement for our students and staff. Our priority is to give students the tools they need to balance these major sporting commitments with their academic and personal growth. The support from our teachers and community ensures every student can make the most of this opportunity, both on the field and in the classroom.” Mr Cullen adds.

Balancing Sports and Academics

To keep students on top of their studies during the SANIX tour, a comprehensive academic support program has been implemented.

Before departure, the Teaching and Learning team works with each student to create a personalised study plan, breaking down assignments into manageable tasks. Students are equipped with practical study strategies and have full online access to school resources, ensuring they can stay connected with their teachers for support.

While on tour, structured study blocks are scheduled between training and matches. With daily planners, regular check-ins, and dedicated quiet study spaces, our students are well-supported to balance their academic commitments with this incredible sporting opportunity.

Connecting Through Culture

Beyond the classroom, the tour itinerary includes visits to significant historical sites, like Hiroshima. These visits give students insight into major world events and their ongoing impact. On previous tours, students visited Nagasaki and reflected on the history and consequences of the atomic bomb. This year, the trip to Hiroshima will deepen their understanding of these moments and provide powerful learning experiences outside the rugby field.

Recognising the importance of cultural respect, we provide a dedicated cultural orientation session before departure. Here, students learn about Japanese customs, social expectations, and traditions—building understanding and appreciation that will help them interact thoughtfully with hosts and opponents alike while in Japan.

Real Experiences, Real Growth

During the SANIX tour, our students take on the dual challenge of elite rugby and academic study. With strong support from teachers and staff, they balance both commitments and make the most of every opportunity.

The real value of our sporting tours lies in the personal growth students experience—helping each other, embracing new cultures, and building lasting friendships. Through shared challenges and daily support, our students learn and grow together, making every moment count...
