Boarding Choice - Years 5 -12
With two boarding houses for girls and three for boys, and over 80 years of experience, we are experts in boarding.
Boarding is integral to the Downlands community and our boarders are the heart and soul of the College. Established in 1931, Downlands welcomed day boys and girls in 1971 and has been fully coeducational since 1993. Coeducation has the advantage of keeping families together - brothers and sisters are able to stay, live and grow up alongside each other, forming memories that last a lifetime.
Downlands is the boarding school of choice for many rural families in Queensland, New South Wales, and the Northern Territory, and international students are also welcomed. Up to 300 students and eight residential staff call Downlands home during school terms and three families live on campus full time.
The boarding experience is much more than just meals and beds. Downlands provides an environment that promotes growth as an individual, the development of interpersonal skills and access to a wide variety of opportunities and activities that may not otherwise be available.
Full time, weekday and casual boarding options plus an Extended Day Student program are available. See details below.
To assist our busy families with managing their student’s academic and co-curricular schedules, families may wish to consider Casual Boarding or our Extended Day Student program.
Many families find casual boarding (four nights or fewer per week on an irregular basis) helps ease the time constraints many of us face every day while providing students time to meet their commitments within a safe, secure and structured environment.
At Downlands College we offer casual overnight boarding which includes overnight stay, meals, organised study routines, secure computer network access and opportunity to participate in various sporting and cultural pursuits.
Extended Day Student Program
The Extended Day Student program allows parents to select one of two options:
- Students can stay at the College under the care of the boarding house from 7am until the conclusion of study at 8:10pm.
- Sleep-over at the College for one or two nights.
This would be especially useful for students who have early morning commitments to sport, drama, music, Cattle Show team etc.
In addition to the above services, Downlands also offers an Extended Day Student (After School) service. This service runs from 3:10pm until 8:10pm only, however parents can elect to collect their child earlier if required.
The Extended Day Student Program is subject to availability. A minimum of three school days’ notice is required prior to using the program.

Boarding students enjoy the use of the dining room which is also available to Day students for a small fee. Both hot and cold menus are available for every meal.
For our staff, caring for boarding students is more than a job; it is a vocation. The family is a model for the level of care provided by our professional, dedicated staff.
A busy boarder is a happy boarder, and through an energetic Activities committee, boarding students are kept active with a full calendar of events, including:
- theme parks
- climbing Tabletop Mountain
- attending sporting events
- rock climbing
- pool parties
- trivia nights
- social events with other boarding schools
All of these activities are covered by Downlands’ all inclusive boarding fees, so no-one misses out.
Downlands is proud to be a member of the Australian Boarding Schools Association (ABSA) which serves to support and develop best practice in school residential communities across Australia.
