principal's message

Over the past three weeks, Downlands College has experienced a period of strong community engagement and student achievement across a range of co‑curricular and pastoral activities. One of the highlights was Grandparents Day , when more than 500 grandparents were welcomed onto campus. Students shared classroom experiences and participated in a special morning tea, strengthening intergenerational connections within the College community.

Sporting and mentoring initiatives were also prominent. During the same week, the 1st XV rugby team visited the Junior School, sharing lunch and activities with younger students in a gesture that reinforced leadership, service, and community bonds.

Student success was evident in interschool competitions. At the Glennie School Interschool Equestrian Competition , Downlands riders achieved strong results, including reserve champion titles in dressage and show horse events. Similarly, the Cattle Show Team enjoyed an exceptional weekend in Oakey and Warwick, with multiple first-place finishes, championship awards, and recognition for excellence in judging and parading.

Collectively, these events reflect Downlands College’s continued emphasis on holistic education, community connection, and excellence beyond the classroom.

MISSION

At this time of year, we continue to reflect on the themes of this Lenten period. Each year, through Project Compassion, Caritas Australia offers us a significant opportunity to become ambassadors for Christ. In other words, we must try to live the message of Jesus, which is one of justice, compassion, inclusion and care. We know that Caritas is the Catholic Church’s most important and successful fundraising branch. It began in Australia, and we’re proud to be part of it.

Each week, we’ve offered each House the chance to donate to Project Compassion. We’ve also provided some more extensive information on each of the men after whom the Houses have been named, and we’ve come to a greater awareness of just how significant their contribution has been to the story of the MSC. We wanted each of the Houses to be proud of their founders and to use this as inspiration for generous and enthusiastic giving to the Caritas Project Compassion appeal. The response has been incredible. On the back of over $1800 raised from Shrove Tuesday, in each short week, each House, in both the Junior and Secondary spaces, has raised more than $1000! This has far exceeded our expectations, and we are grateful for the generosity of our community. Our fundraising will continue through to the end of the Lenten period, and we thank families across the College for their support in our efforts for Caritas.

Another highlight this term has been our Retreat Days for our Year 8 and Year 10 students and Pastoral Development staff. Michael Fitzpatrick from Belum provided students and staff with an opportunity not just for fun and fellowship, but also the experience of deep reflection. Students were invited to consider what truly matters to them, as individuals and as a community of young people who will lead our future society, which they are now helping to shape. Next week, we’re looking forward to the Year 7 Tradition and Spirit Day – a special day set aside for the Year 7s to build their own community and deepen their understanding of their place and role as MSC Downlanders. Our final day will be an opportunity for us to come together as a whole College community for a special liturgy to mark the commencement of Holy Week.

GRANDPARENTS DAY

We were absolutely delighted to welcome over 500 wonderful grandparents to our campus for Grandparents Day. The grounds were filled with smiles, laughter, and precious moments as our Downlanders proudly showed their grandparents around and shared stories from their school day.

The morning was made even sweeter with a beautiful morning tea served on the front lawns, where grandparents and grandchildren sat together chatting, taking photos, and simply enjoying each other’s company under the sunshine.

A huge thank you to every grandparent who joined us. Your love, wisdom, and support mean more to our students than words can express. Seeing the joy on the children’s faces as they introduced you to their teachers and friends was something we will all remember for a long time.

We hope you enjoyed every moment as much as we did!

The 2026 Musical Mamma Mia!

The excitement continues to grow as we edge closer to Opening Night of the 2026 Downlands College Musical, Mamma Mia! Students are hard at work perfecting their performances, bringing energy, talent, and passion to the stage as they prepare for what promises to be a spectacular show.

Tickets are available via the EMPIRE THEATRE for performances on Friday 29 ^th and 30 ^th May. Tickets are selling fast so don’t delay or you might miss out!

Year 8 Spirit Day

This year, St Patrick’s Day also marked the date of our Year 8 Retreat.

The day was facilitated by presenter, Michael Fitzpatrick, who has a deep understanding of the need to create greater personal awareness and healthy relationships with peers.

The day started by allowing students to connect with each other in an informal setting, getting to know their peers’ interests and hobbies.

In a relaxed setting, the students were also able to explore many significant topics and unlock group issues that were relevant to the cohort.

Mr Fitzpatrick also encouraged many students to ‘get out of their comfort zones’ and explore what respectful, supportive relationships look and feel like.

While many might have been afraid to sing publicly, it was wonderful to see some students embrace this challenge!

The day allowed for reflection, personal growth and encouraged our students to feel confident and authentically themselves.

Junior chess competition

On Tuesday, March 3, 2026, 15 intrepid Downlanders from the Junior School, accompanied by three staff members, Ms Darr, Mr Calder, and Mr Shaw, boarded the Robinson bus for Rangeville State School to meet and compete with 350 primary students across Toowoomba at the Toowoomba Chess Club Individual Primary Chess Competition.

The three students from Year 3 and the twelve from Years 4 to 6 competed in 7 rounds of competition chess with varying degrees of success, with almost everyone scoring at least one win. The discussions of what worked and what didn’t were intense, but we all learnt something new and experienced a great time of friendship making, teamwork support, and skill development. Beaming faces and endless discussion on tactics and moves were the order of the day – and that was not just the students but the parents who came to support their student on the day - thank you!

The students conducted themselves in an exemplary manner throughout the day, exhibiting great sportsmanship and a true Downlander spirit. Our Year 4 students were standouts, with Elijah Barker our top result in the Open Category on 5 out of 8 points coming in 63 ^rd in a field of 224 competitors. Max Anthony was our best novice result on 3.5 out of 7, placing 45 ^th out of 99 competitors.

For a very young Chess program, these results are really promising and will no doubt develop in the coming years

We are looking forward to the next Primary Team Competition in early September and the Secondary Team Competition in August.

Sporting Achievements and

Community Spirit Shine at Downlands

It has been a busy and exciting week of sport at Downlands, with many teams competing at a high level and representing the College with pride. We congratulate all students who have participated in Term 1 sport. Your commitment, teamwork, and sportsmanship have been outstanding throughout the season.

The past week has seen a number of our teams reach Grand Finals, with more still to come. Our 1st VII Netball team recorded a strong 43–28 trial match victory over Mary MacKillop, showing promising form ahead of their upcoming season.

In cricket, both the 1st XI and Under 15 teams competed in the T20 Grand Finals against St Mary’s. While both sides were narrowly defeated, their efforts to reach the final and compete so strongly are to be commended.

Our AFL program also celebrated success, with the Under 17 Boys team securing an impressive 81–56 Grand Final win over South Toowoomba. The Under 17 Girls team also performed admirably, finishing as runners-up after a hard-fought match.

The 1st XV Rugby team faced a strong Marist Ashgrove side in Brisbane, gaining valuable experience despite the result not going their way.

Our Downlands Red Water Polo team finished fourth in a tough Toowoomba Water Polo competition and the Blue team finished 6th.

In Touch Football, our 12 Boys, 14 Boys and Open Girls finished as Runners-up in the Toowoomba Touch Competition and our Open Boys finished as Champions in an undefeated season.

Introducing our health hub champions

My name is Sian, and I've been a Registered Nurse since 2021.

I am a Toowoomba girl, born and bred and lucky enough to be an old Downlands student myself. I loved my time at the school so much that I could not pass up the opportunity to come back and work at the place that shaped me into the person I am today.

I studied nursing after school at USQ here in Toowoomba, and then was lucky enough to secure a postgraduate position on the Paediatric Ward at Toowoomba Hospital, and I have never left. During my nursing career so far, I completed my Paediatric Transitions Program and then went on to complete my Postgraduate Certificate in Paediatric Nursing. This year, I have enrolled in the Post Graduate Certificate in Diabetes Education, as I currently do one shift a fortnight in Paediatric Diabetes Education at Toowoomba Hospital and have a strong interest in this field of paediatric nursing.

Along with this, I was lucky enough to join the Downlands Health Centre team last year and now work here every Friday. I thoroughly enjoy working at the school, and we have the best team in the Health Centre, which makes my job easy to enjoy.

My favourite part of working in this role is getting to know the students, learning about their backgrounds, and building relationships with them to make the health centre a safe and welcoming space for them to visit while they are unwell. I love having a chat and enjoy using my past school experience and knowledge to build rapport with the students.

Outside of work, I am often found keeping myself busy, riding my horses, baking, going to the gym or going on adventures/travelling!

Clause Section 7 of the Conditions of Enrolment which states: Changes in Enrolment 7.1 Parents shall give the Principal notice, in writing, should your family status change in relation to the contractual circumstances and financial liability for your child’s enrolment. 7.2 If you wish to change your child’s boarder/day status, you must give the College ten (10) weeks' advance notice prior to the commencement of the next term, in writing and addressed to the Principal. Teaching and Learning Year 7 to 12 Term 1 News

I wish to take this opportunity of providing parents and carers with information concerning teaching and learning for the remainder of Term 1 and the commencement of Term 2. The following is covered: Assessment Block, Interim reports and Parent/Teacher Interviews.

Assessment Block – Year 11

Assessment block will occur from Tuesday 10 March until Tuesday 17 March. Students and parents received the assessment block letter and schedule during Week 4. All students are required to fully meet their assessment obligations, including examination obligations. Students are unable to complete assessment prior to the cohort. If your child is ill and unable to attend an exam, then I would request that you contact the College prior to the commencement of the exam and a medical report will be required to be handed in to the Team Leader of Secondary Studies – Ms Peita Canning.

Students who have SAT/SBA’s may need to reschedule their work placement day to ensure their examination commitments are met. After the completion of the Assessment Block, learning will continue until Thursday 2 April 2026.

Parent/Teacher Interviews – Year 7 to 12 Monday 20 April

Parent/Teacher interviews will be conducted face to face on Monday 20 April from 2pm to 5:30 pm for students in Year 7 to 12. Bookings for these interviews will open to parents on Thursday 2 April 9am. Bookings can be made through Parent Lounge and by clicking Parent Teacher Interviews on the right-hand side menu, then listed on the main page will be the Parent Teacher Interviews applicable to you. By clicking the relevant Parent Teacher Interview link this will take you to the page where you are able to book interviews for your child’s teachers.

principal's message

Downlands has continued to be a very busy place over the last month continuing to offer students and the wider community wonderful opportunities to experience educational opportunities and connection to MSC charism and traditions.

Connecting classroom learning to real life opportunities is critical for students and Downlands staff go above and beyond to provide these opportunities. A few of these opportunities have included the Year 11 Literature and Year 12 Drama Excursion watching The Great Gatsby, Year 12 students attending the University Showcase, Year 12 Geography student’s excursion to Stradbroke Island, Year 12 Legal Studies visiting Queensland Parliament House and the Year 12 Agriculture students visiting a local cotton farm and Mort & Co’s Grassdale Feedlot.

Within the co-curricular space rehearsal for the College Musical, Mamma Mia!, has continued. The Take Note Performing Arts weekend also provided significant time for many of the choirs, ensembles and dance troupes to consolidate performances for the year ahead. The teachers, conductors and support staff are thanked for providing this wonderful opportunity. Sport is also a busy area with weekly competitions in touch, cricket, futsal, volleyball, netball and water polo. Congratulations to students for selection in Darling Downs teams, Queensland state teams and Australian teams. The Cattle Show Team has also had an impressive start to the year with stellar showings at Clifton and Inverell, great results with students achieving success in junior judging, paraders and exhibiting stock in their breed and age classes.

Students have also had the opportunity to participate in camps and pilgrimages: Year 6 attended camp at Lake Moogerah, Year 7 attended camp at CYC Burleigh and the Year 12 Leaders went on the annual pilgrimage to Sydney and Douglas Park.

Some very special events were enjoyed by all students. These included celebrating Father Bob’s 60 years of being a professed MSC, Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday.

Thank you to all students, staff and parents who assisted with a wonderful open day. Having almost 1000 prospective students and parents visit Downlands was fantastic.

MISSION

The highlights this term have been many and especially the weeks around Open Day. After a successful Open Day morning, the day concluded with Sunday night Boarders’ Mass where Fr Bob Irwin MSC was both celebrant and celebrity! The students offered their hearty congratulations to mark Fr Bob’s 60 years as an MSC with singing and reverie. The celebrations spilled over to the following morning where the whole College gathered in the Sacré Cœur to offer sincere thanks to Fr Bob for those 60 years of service to MSC education in this country and in Vietnam. The students had rehearsed ‘Shout Out My Soul’ the previous week as a gift and a prayer for Fr Bob. During the assembly, staff and students shared memories and special moments of Fr Bob’s ministry that had impacted them directly and as members of an MSC community. At break time, the students and staff celebrated with cupcakes for morning tea and the Junior School students prepared a special card for Fr Bob. We’re sure that he will treasure these messages from the students.

All this occurred while the ten student leaders were away on pilgrimage to MSC heartland in Sydney and Douglas Park. We maintain that while the students were singing to Fr Bob at Downlands, simultaneously the leaders were singing to the elderly MSC brothers and priests gathered for Mass on Monday morning in the Monastery Chapel. There were many highlights of the 2026 Pilgrimage, and this was probably one of those most special moments. Friday evening’s meeting and dining with their Chevalier College counterparts and Assistant Principal: Faith and Mission, Mr Sandy Abbey, was a time of camaraderie, true connection and spontaneous singing. Sunday’s meeting with Fr Roger Purcell in the Mission Office was another highlight as were pre-lunch drinks and Sunday lunch with the gents in the dining room. The rain fell most of the afternoon on Sunday providing a particularly somber backdrop to our visit to the site of the Bondi tragedy. Fr Kimi Vunivesilevu and Br Phil O’Reilly graciously invited Downlanders past and present to Treand House for a gathering that included Dan Fraser’s daughter, Molly (Class of 2021) who, with friends Brooke and Ethan, shared words of wisdom about experiences of leadership during and post school as members of the Armed Forces. The meeting could not have been more poignant as Fr Pierre-Marie Tréand who was so instrumental in establishing the MSC in this country, looked on from above viewing the legacy of his work and that of the early Australian MSC. We think he would have been very pleased.

Upon our return, the College celebrated Shrove Tuesday and once again the Rugby and Netball teams had sleeves rolled up to serve our community. The Ash Wednesday Liturgy provided space for contemplation and peace, and we thank sincerely the Year 12 students for leading our community with care, respect and kindness.

This year, we were thrilled to see over 40 students apply for a Junior School Ambassador position. The strong level of interest reflects the enthusiasm, pride, and commitment our students have toward serving their school community.

The first stage of the process saw every applicant deliver a leadership speech to the Year 5 and 6 cohorts. Standing in front of peers is no small task, and each student demonstrated courage as they shared their understanding of leadership and the ways they hope to contribute to our school.

From these applicants, a number of students were shortlisted for the next phase: an interview with Mr Wilkie, Mrs Laffin, and our two College Captains. These interviews provided an opportunity for students to share their ideas in more depth, reflect on previous leadership experiences, and speak confidently about the contributions they hope to make. The interview panel noted the maturity, honesty, and thoughtfulness displayed by all students throughout the process. Following careful consideration, the final selections were made.

While only a small number of students can hold an official Ambassador title, every Year 6 student should be immensely proud of the way they conducted themselves throughout this process. Their speeches, teamwork, and personal reflection demonstrated the strong culture of leadership we continue to build in the Junior School.

Importantly, we remind our students that leadership is not defined by a badge. Every Year 6 student, regardless of whether they received a formal role, is recognised as a leader of the Junior School. Through their everyday actions, the way they treat others, and their willingness to be positive role models, they each contribute to shaping a culture of respect, kindness, and responsibility. We are incredibly proud of all our students for embracing it with enthusiasm and heart, and we look forward to seeing their leadership shine throughout the year.

Years 1 and 2 VISIT the farm

During Week 6, our Year 1 and Year 2 students stepped out of the classroom and headed to Downlands Farm for an exciting hands-on learning experience. This special visit helped students bring their Geography lessons to life in a real-world setting.

While exploring the grounds, the children investigated a variety of resources. They learned to identify the differences between natural elements, managed environments, and man-made structures across the property. Seeing these concepts up close gave the students a much clearer understanding of how different resources work together on a working farm.

Beyond identifying resources, the students also discovered what it takes to care for the farm. They learned about the daily practices we use to look after the land, the animals, and the crops, highlighting the importance of responsibility and environmental care.

It was a fantastic day of outdoor education. We love seeing our junior students make meaningful connections between their classroom discussions and the physical world around them.

The 2026 Musical Mamma Mia!

The 2026 Musical Mamma Mia! continues develop with only 10 school weeks of preparation left until opening night on the 29 ^th of May. Year 7 camp

In Week 5, Year 7 students attended camp at CYC Adventures on the Gold Coast. Despite rainy weather on arrival, students remained enthusiastic and quickly settled in before beginning their activities.

Throughout the camp, students participated in a wide range of experiences designed to build teamwork, confidence, and resilience. Activities included site exploration, initiative games, body boarding at Burleigh, paddle boarding, and archery tag, which proved to be a standout favourite.

Evening activities such as night games and trivia further encouraged collaboration and problem‑solving, with students notably outperforming staff during trivia.

Camp provided valuable opportunities for students to form new friendships and strengthen existing ones through shared challenges and teamwork. Students demonstrated positive attitudes, willingness to help others, and courage in stepping outside their comfort zones. The camp was a highly successful experience, made possible by the dedication and support of the staff who attended.

Downlands DIVAS Unite for International Women’s Day

On Thursday 5 March, Downlands DIVAS gathered on the Front Lawn for a Pilates Mat Workout led by past student Jess Fitzgibbons from Sculpt and Soul. The lawn was alive with energy as women, mothers, and mentors—dressed brightly in pink and purple—came together in support and celebration.

Laughter, encouragement, and a shared purpose filled the air as participants moved through the session, connecting with old friends and making new ones.

The event was more than just a workout; it became a powerful reminder of what can be accomplished when a community unites. Gold coin donations collected went directly to Protea Place, a local organisation making a real difference in the lives of women in need. The generosity and enthusiasm of those who attended showed how small actions, like gathering for a Pilates class, can have a meaningful impact.

Sporting Achievements and

Community Spirit Shine at Downlands

It has been another outstanding fortnight of sport at Downlands College, with participation, performance and school spirit on full display.

Our Peak2Park community fun run was a tremendous success, with Downlands registering over 140 runners, the largest group among all organisations involved. The strong turnout highlighted the wonderful community spirit within our College, with students, staff and families enjoying a fantastic morning together.

On the rugby field, our 1st XV recorded an impressive 40–10 victory over St Patrick's College, Shorncliffe, in Brisbane. The squad continues to build strongly as preparations progress, with the team for the upcoming SANIX World Youth Rugby Tournament to be announced shortly.

In QCIS T20 Cricket, both our 1st XI and Under 15 teams remain undefeated and have already secured their Grand Final positions. The 2nd XI face two must-win matches in the coming weeks, with the exciting possibility of an all-Downlands Grand Final.

Meanwhile, Touch Football, Futsal, and Water Polo seasons are rapidly approaching finals, with a large number of Downlands teams strongly positioned for deep runs. It is an exciting time across all programs as we head toward the business end of the season.

Performing Arts

On February 20th at 6:00 AM, 107 students and 14 staff members embarked on an inspiring journey to the 2026 Take Note Performing Arts Camp at the Alex Park campground in Alexandra Headlands. Students from the Dance, Music, and Media Club dedicated themselves to an incredible 83 rehearsals, allowing us to accomplish a month's worth of practice in just one weekend. This remarkable commitment laid a strong foundation for an exciting year of performances ahead.

Amidst the rigorous schedule, we also cherished our traditional activities, including a lively Games Night and Trivia organised by our Performing Arts Captains, Alex and Bridie. The fun continued with a "Hall of Fame" themed bowling night, as well as our beloved morning beach walks and afternoon beach swims. The progress made during rehearsals has significantly advanced our Performing Arts students, and we are excited about the performances that lie ahead.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to the dedicated staff for their time and expertise, and congratulations to all students for their outstanding commitment to enhancing the Performing Arts department at Downlands.

In other exciting news, our Acro and Pom team showcased their hard work with their first-ever performance during the Spirit Assembly on Wednesday, March 3rd. Under the guidance of Miss Overton, Miss Newman, and Miss Cowlishaw, the students developed energising routines to support this year’s Spirit events. Their dedication truly brought the performance to life—well done!

Additionally, on Thursday, March 5th, our secondary school performers took to the stage for a captivating concert aimed at the Junior Years students in the Prep and Year 1 area. A special mention goes to Performing Arts Captain Alex Phillips for organising this wonderful event, which entertained our younger students while demonstrating that the performing arts can be both dynamic and fun.

Lille Merlow: From Downlands BOARDER to Collegiate Rugby

Hailing from the coastal town of Yeppoon in Queensland, 18-year-old Lille Merlow has always been drawn to the thrill of rugby. As a freshman at Lindenwood University in Saint Charles, Missouri, she is now channeling that passion into the NCAA Division I Women's Rugby program while pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Sport and Fitness Administration/Management.

Merlow's journey to the U.S. was paved by her formative years as a boarder at Downlands College. Moving from her family home in Yeppoon to Downlands—a distance of over 500 kilometers—meant adapting to independent living. This experience, which included structured routines, shared living with peers, and participation in high-level sports like the Downlands Rugby 7s team, helped to prepare her for the challenges of relocating across the Pacific. As captain of the Downlands Rugby 7's team, she led them to victory in the 2025 Selena Worsley Cup, scoring a try in the thrilling series against rivals The Glennie School.

Since arriving at Lindenwood, Merlow has embraced her new "family" in the Lions rugby team, balancing the excitement of collegiate athletics with the demands of freshman life. "The first few weeks have been exciting, daunting, and rewarding all at the same time. As much as I miss my family at home, I’m grateful to have found a new family in my team here at Lindenwood."

As a utility forward who represented the Toowoomba Bears and shone at the Australian Schools Rugby Championships, Merlow's talent has already positioned her as a key recruit in a program renowned for national championships. Her story highlights the global growth of women's rugby and the role of boarding school experiences in fostering the independence needed for international success. With her drive and background, Merlow is poised for remarkable achievements—watch this space!

Welcome back to Term 1. Much of the first few weeks has focused on building community at Downlands. This has involved spending time welcoming new staff, students and families and ensuring all felt the family nature of a Downlands education. Sharing a meal with our new boarding students and families was a major highlight of the new year.

Celebrating academic successes with our Year 12 cohort of 2025 was a wonderful evening. It was fantastic to hear of students’ pathways and plans for the future. Congratulations to William Murtagh as Dux of the College (Father George Butler MSC Prize) and Myles Farrington as Runner-Up to the Dux (Kevin Hanley Prize).

Our focus on community has continued for parents with engagement nights at the College and through the P&F who have held connection evenings off-site. Daily the relaunch of My Downlands has focussed on providing a clearer and more informative communication experience for parents, this will continue to be refined through feedback and user experience.

Week 2 saw three wonderful community events. The Secondary Swimming Carnival, the Junior Swimming Carnival and the Opening Eucharist which incorporated the missioning of the College’s new Chaplain, Father Chung, and the leadership induction and commissioning for Year 12 leaders and students. These three events clearly showed the spirit, family and leadership of students and staff. Father Chung captured how students approached these events perfectly in his homily.

“By the end of his journey, the boy realized that to become successful does not mean to gain something important, but to become a loving person. You come to Downlands in search of knowledge. You come hoping for success. You come wanting to build a good future. Education is not only a gift but also about forming your heart, which should be filled with love.”

The video tells a story about a boy who wants to become a monk. In order to become a monk, the boy has to finish the final task and prove to himself that he can be a monk. But by the end of his journey, the boy realised that to become successful does not mean to gain something important, but to become a loving person.

You come to Downlands searching for knowledge. You come hoping for success. You come wanting to build a good future. Education is a not only a gift, it is also about forming your heart, which should be filled with love.

That’s what Jesus said in the Gospel: “Love one another as I have loved you.”

Notice Jesus doesn’t say, “Love people who are easy to love.”

He doesn’t say, “Love people who are like you.”

But, He says, “Love one another as I have loved you.”

And how does Jesus love? He is patient. He forgives. He notices people others ignore.

Jesus goes even further: “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

A Brilliant Start to the Year for the junior school

The Junior School year has launched with tremendous energy and joy! On the first day, students arrived bubbling with excitement and big smiles.

The fun continued with our Year 2 students' enthusiasm to learn about natural, managed and man-made resources and how to care for them sustainably. They have established fish tanks and created vegetable and fairy gardens in their classrooms, bringing immense joy and hands-on learning.

Our Year 6 students have enjoyed a 3-day camp at Lake Moogerah with many making a ‘catch of the day’ in their fishing expeditions. Students enjoyed canoeing, boating, tubing and growing their leadership skills through team building and activities.

A special highlight was the visit from the Brisbane Lions, who inspired our young Gryphons with footy skill sessions, autographs, and motivational stories.

Excitement is in the air as rehearsals begin for the 2026 Downlands College Musical, Mamma Mia! Students are hard at work perfecting their performances, bringing energy, talent, and passion to the stage as they prepare for what promises to be a spectacular show.

Incredible opportunity for downlands dance

Downlands Dancers recently had the incredible opportunity to work with past student, Brent Street (alumni), and soon-to-be Royal Caribbean dancer Imogen Rowbotham on their Australian Dance Festival routine.

Students worked tirelessly to learn complex, style-specific choreography as they prepared to perform on a national stage. The group will compete in the School Division, Resonate, at the Australian Dance Festival in Sydney this September. Extensive preparations will continue alongside regular Dance Troupe and Musical rehearsals, making for a very busy year for Downlands Dance.

We thank Imogen for sharing her wisdom, energy, and exceptional choreography with our dancers, and we wish her every success as she embarks on her professional dance career.

BOARDING NEWS

This year's Boarding Activities began with our Boarding Bonanza, an evening packed with carnival rides, mini golf, photobooth fun, pool games, and friendly poolside volleyball matches. It was a fantastic way for boarders to connect, laugh, and create lasting memories as the year kicked off.

The fun continued with a weekend trip to the Gold Coast. Students enjoyed some retail therapy at Pacific Fair before heading to the beach to soak up the sun and relax by the waves.

These events set the stage for a great year ahead, filled with opportunities for our boarders to bond, grow, and make unforgettable memories together.

Junior School

Piperon claimed the Overall Winning House title, while Vandel took out the highly competitive House Spirit award, showing fantastic energy and support throughout the day.

Secondary School

Vandel dominated the Secondary School Interhouse carnival to take the Overall Winning House title. Jouet were deserved winners of the House Spirit award, bringing incredible atmosphere and encouragement from the sidelines.

A huge congratulations to every swimmer who competed, to the house captains and supporters who created such a vibrant atmosphere, and especially to the record breakers who delivered incredible personal bests.

Well done to all involved — this year’s carnival was a fantastic showcase of talent, determination, and school spirit!

Travel Safety Reminder

As we commence the new year, we would like to take this opportunity to remind all our students about the importance of travel safety and making good decisions when navigating roads and public spaces.

We ask that all students adhere to the necessary road rules, use pedestrian crossings where available, and remain mindful of oncoming traffic, whether road or rail. Recently, we have received several reports of students not paying adequate attention or making rushed decisions when exiting cars, crossing roads or railway lines, or driving around the College in the designated school zone.

The safety of our students is paramount, and we appreciate your support in reinforcing these expectations at home.

Students Embark on a Cultural Adventure in Japan

Downlands Senior Japanese language students create lifelong memories and immerse themselves in culture during an unforgettable 2025 tour.

Our Senior Japanese language students have returned from the 2025 Downlands Japan Tour, an excursion that offered deep cultural immersion and a chance to sharpen their language skills. This unique opportunity allowed students to step beyond the classroom and experience the beauty and diversity of Japanese life firsthand.

Downlands students, Evy and Ivy, shared their reflections on the trip. "As Senior Japanese students, we feel very privileged to have been a part of the 2025 Downlands Japan Tour," they said.

"It was not only an immersive cultural experience, but an opportunity to make connections with both our own peers and the students of Fukuyama High School. Engaging with the daily lives of Japanese students our own age gave us a once-in-a-lifetime experience that we will never forget. Their kindness towards us is held close to our hearts."

The tour offered a perfect blend of traditional and modern Japan. Students participated in serene tea ceremonies and soaked in the beauty of ancient temples. They also experienced the thrill of Universal Studios and soaked in the energy of bustling Tokyo. Evy and Ivy noted it was "nothing short of phenomenal," giving them a feel for Japan "through both traditional and modern lenses."

Beyond the cultural highlights, the tour fostered a strong sense of camaraderie. The trip allowed students across different year levels to form new friendships. Evy and Ivy expressed gratitude for the dedicated Downlands teachers who guided them through Japan's busy streets and train stations, ensuring a safe and connected group.

"It could never have been the same without our teachers with us all the way," they shared. "The memories we made travelling across Japan will be memories we have for a lifetime."

The 2025 Downlands Japan Tour was an immersive experience that deepened our students’ appreciation for Japanese culture and created lasting bonds. At Downlands College, we are proud to offer enriching opportunities like this that extend learning beyond the classroom. Growing Future Farmers with Hügelkultur

At Downlands College Rural Centre, you might come across some raised garden beds that look a little different from the usual veggie patch. Beneath these mounds, something special is quietly taking place.

Our Year 11 Rural Operations students recently began a hügelkultur project, exploring whether alternative gardening methods can promote sustainable food production in our local climate.

Hügelkultur (pronounced “hoo-gell-culture”) is an age-old agricultural practice rooted in German and Eastern European traditions. The term means “mound culture” or “hill culture,” reflecting its distinct shape. The process involves building up layers of decaying wood, organic material, soil, and compost to create a living, breathing garden bed. Over time, this mound enriches the soil, nurtures the plants above, and exemplifies the beauty of working in harmony with nature’s cycles. It’s a method that values renewal and resourcefulness.

Guided by their teacher, Mr Will Mann, the students scouted the paddock for old logs, branches, and woody debris, to form the foundation of their mounds. They then layered sticks, leaf litter, and green garden waste, collected from around the school. Each layer brought different textures and nutrients to the mix, creating the perfect environment for decomposition. Finally, the mounds were topped with a rich layer of soil and compost, locking in moisture and providing an ideal space for planting vegetables. Through teamwork and care, the class transformed an empty patch of earth into a living garden bed that will serve the College for seasons to come.

The hügelkultur project is more than a lesson in alternative gardening. It’s an opportunity for students to learn about self-sufficiency, environmental care, and the value of shared effort.

"I wanted the students to be given an opportunity to try a different way of producing food to what they might have seen in the past. Simple ideas like this are hopefully going to help with sustainability in the future," Mr Mann says.

And through hands-on experience in Agriculture crop establishment, our Rural Operations students are learning skills that go beyond the textbook.

"Taking what was just a bare patch of dirt and transforming it into a thriving garden, hopefully, is giving the students a unique opportunity to do a full establishment of a crop. Amy's Journey to Bond University: A Glimpse into the Future

Amy, a current Year 12 Downlands student, recently participated in the Bond University Business School Year 12 Extension Program. The program aims to enhance high school education and ready students for university life. Outstanding students from the workshop sessions on campus received a partial tuition scholarship for an undergraduate program at Bond University the next year. Amy, one of the high achievers, earned a scholarship for her 2025 tuition at Bond University. We had a conversation with Amy to delve deeper into her time in the Bond University Year 12 Extension Program.

What were your experiences like as a student taking part in the program?

The program is about offering potential future students the chance to develop skills in the business area and give them a taste of what life as a Bond University student could be like. We completed various practical tasks such as creating a prototype and business proposal in 10 minutes to meet a need given to us in a brief. We also participated in workshops on how to 'excel in Excel,' experienced Bond University student life on a campus tour and designed an event to boost tourism in Australia.

What did you gain from this experience?

I gained friendships with the different participants, a scholarship towards my tuition next year, and knowledge that I feel sets me ahead of the curve for when I start at Bond University next year.

How do you feel to have completed the program?

Completing the program gave me a sense of accomplishment, as well as the reassurance that this area of study is the field I would love to study post-high school.

What do you hope to study at Bond University?

I hope to study a double major in marketing and entrepreneurship at the Bond University Business School. I love the creative aspects of both fields as well as the amount of post-graduate opportunities this degree will offer. Becoming an entrepreneur who develops something beneficial and influential, and witnessing its widespread use, would be a surreal feeling I hope to achieve one day.

Were there any experiences or people that influenced your decision in future study?

The person who supported me the most with this opportunity was Mrs Katie Wright, the Curriculum Leader of Learning Pathways and Downlands College VET Coordinator. Mrs Wright was the first teacher I wanted to talk about my achievement with, and I wouldn’t have participated in the program had she not encouraged me to. My sister also played a role in my decision-making process. She is an alumnus of Bond University and her positive experiences during her law degree studies there were a great source of inspiration for me. Bond has always been my number one pick for university, and this programme has made the possibility for me to attend a reality.

From Classroom to Cattle: Georgia's Experience at Beef Week 2024

When it comes to the vibrant world of cattle shows, few students can boast the level of dedication and experience that Georgia, a Year 11 student at Downlands College, brings to the table. With nearly seven years under her belt as part of the school's Cattle Show Team, Georgia’s passion for the cattle industry is both deep-rooted and evident in her enthusiasm. Georgia recently won BEEF 2024’s Commercial Young Judges competition placing first out of 250 other competitors. Georgia also placed second in the young Stud Judges competition.

"I have always been interested in cattle showing as I have always had a background in the cattle industry," she explains. Rockhampton BEEF Week is a significant event for those passionate about the cattle industry, and for Hamish, a Year 11 student at Downlands College, it is an experience brimming with learning and excitement. Hamish alongside three other Downlanders was a part of the winning team that took out first place in the Schools Team Judging competition. We sat down with Hamish to understand what a typical day looks like and what the event means to him.

What’s your name and what year level are you in?

Hamish in Year 11.

How long have you been a part of the Cattle Show Team here at Downlands?

I’ve been part of the College's Cattle Show Team for two years but have shown cattle beforehand.

Have you always been interested in being part of the Cattle Show Team?

I have always been interested in the Cattle Show Team, and it influenced my decision to move to Downlands.

What is your favourite thing about being in the Cattle Show Team?

My favourite thing about being a part of the Cattle Show Team is the new experiences and opportunities around the beef industry, as well as the chance to meet new people from different grades and create new friendships.

What have you been doing at BEEF? What has your experience been so far?

At BEEF, I worked for a local cattle stud that had three different breeds of cattle including Limousines, Angus, and Brahmans. We have competed in the prime judges, team judges, and stud judges’ competitions, where the school was very successful. My experience so far has been unreal. I have enjoyed every minute of it, meeting new faces in the industry and learning new skills from the best of the best.

What does working for a stud look like? What’s a day in the life?

Getting out of bed around 4am is common, before cleaning out the cattle stalls and feeding the cattle. If the cattle are being shown, we must wash, blow dry, and comb the cattle to show them off to their best ability. Then, we go into the cattle ring with other cattle of the same breed to compare which animal is superior on a range of criteria.

What opportunities do you think you’ll get or have received from being at BEEF and working for a stud?

After winning stud young judges for my age group, I have been invited to be the associate judge at the Esk Show later in the year. Judging is an opportunity for the community to see your ability to compare and assess cattle. Additionally, I am discussing career options in the agriculture industry with different companies promoting various programs to school graduates to see what they have to offer.

Here at Downlands, we have many faces. Faces you may have never met before and faces you see regularly. But, behind each face at Downlands is the heart of the College. Meet Pauline and Kerri; With a combined 41 years here at Downlands, they're the face of our front office.

What is your role at Downlands, and how long have you been a Downlander?
Kerri: I have worked at Downlands for 24 years. I work in the Front Office, Administration, which involves answering the phone, maintaining student attendance records and assisting with student and parent enquiries.
Pauline: I've worked at Downlands College for 17 Years, in the Front Office, Administration. Both Kerri and I are often the first people you will see when entering the College, as we are located at Reception to assist you with your enquiries.

What aspect do you enjoy the most about your role?
Kerri: I love meeting new students and their families and watching them grow throughout the years. I also enjoy seeing our students develop their passions and interests whilst achieving their goals here at Downlands.
Pauline: I enjoy welcoming and helping whoever may come through the door next. Whether it's a new family starting their Downlands' journey or if it's a current family who needs assistance.

What is your favourite Downlands event and why?
Kerri: I have two favourite Downlands events: 1. Downlands Art Exhibition: It is amazing to watch it come alive and the finished result is always exceptional. 2. The College Musical: watching the work that teachers and students put into it is outstanding. The finished product is a joy to watch, and rivals many professional musicals.
Pauline: The Art Exhibition is my favourite event. The Downlands Art Exhibition is a world class exhibition and is a wonderful opportunity to welcome the extended community to our College.

What is your favourite aspect about Downlands?
Kerri: My favourite part about Downlands is the students, and meeting the MSC priests and Brothers.
Pauline: I love the view from Asprey (building) verandah. We have a magnificent campus and I appreciate the work that our Facility Staff do to help maintain it.

What do you think it means to be a true Downlander?
Kerri: To be a true Downlander means to always be aware of others and have a good social justice ethic.
Pauline: To be a true Downlander means to be honest, inclusive and be interested in the people around you and to give a little of yourself each day to help others.

Tell us about you, what do you do in your downtime?
Kerri: I enjoy spending time with Family and Friends and suffer the rollercoaster ride of barracking for Collingwood.
Pauline: I love spending time with family and friends and any spare time I probably need to be in the paddock on our small farm chasing weeds!

A piece of advice for our current students and/or their families?
Kerri: Embrace the opportunities that Downlands offer. You will make lifelong friends whether you're staff, student or family.
Pauline: Allow yourself to enjoy the opportunities that come your way. Be kind and respectful to the people you meet.

How Agricultural Science led to our giant pumpkin success

In case you haven't heard, here at Downlands, we don't just specialise in exceptional education, we also excel in growing giant award-winning pumpkins. 202kg of pumpkin to be exact!

Our Year 9 and 10 Agricultural Science students recently entered the EKKA's Giant Pumpkin Competition and were awarded first place for the show's largest pumpkin. But, you may be wondering, what does growing giant pumpkins have to do with exceptional education?

Our students spent hours learning theoretical and practical knowledge on all things horticulture to be able to succeed in the growing process. Agricultural Science is an integral part of the Science curriculum at Downlands. The subject provides opportunities for students of all ages to participate in a variety of projects at the 14-hectare on-site farm.

Downlands is a proud partner and a Gateway School to Agribusiness which aims to help young people make a successful transition from school into further education and/or employment. The project encourages partnerships between schools, training (VET), universities and industry to provide career opportunities for young people.

The program provides opportunities for students and school communities to engage in a diverse range of careers across businesses based on primary industries. Students are able to gain valuable experience in the industry while still at school, providing them with the tools and knowledge to make informed decisions about training and employment upon leaving school, by raising the profile of careers in the Agribusiness sector.

Miss Gilbar's Hockey Success

Miss Holly Gilbar, a current Downlands College Year 6 teacher, has recently been announced as a team member of the Hockey Australia Squad for the Hockey5s World Cup in Oman next year. We sat down with Miss Gilbar to find out more about her history in the sport and what she's most looking forward to when representing Australia.

How long have you been playing hockey for?

I have been playing field hockey since I was 8 years old. My sister was playing and I thought it looked great. In 2018 I took up indoor hockey which is a smaller and faster version of the game. This will be my first year of Hockey5s as it is the first time that Australia will have a competitive opens team.

What are some of your most notable hockey achievements to date?

After less than 16 months in the sport, I was selected in the Australian Indoor Hockey World Cup squad. I trained as a member of this squad for the three-year lead up to the World Cup, however, a significant knee injury withdrew me from final selection. I have also been a member of the Australian Country field hockey team. This selection in the Hockey5s World Cup squad is my third opportunity to represent Australia in a different variation of the sport.

What are you most looking forward to at the Hockey5s World Cup in Oman?

This tournament will be the inaugural World Cup for Hockey5s. I'm looking forward to the atmosphere of international competition and am excited about the opportunity to be a pioneering member of this variation of hockey, especially as there is currently a push to have Hockey 5's included in the Olympics.

Do you think learning a team sport can benefit school-aged children? If so, why?

Learning a team sport is an amazing opportunity for school aged children as it can teach them life skills within a safe, supportive and fun environment. There is no better way to develop resilience, problem-solving, teamwork, communication and social skills whilst also building your strength and fitness. Plus, it's great fun!

“The heart is the dwelling place where I am, the place to which I withdraw, our hidden centre. Only the Spirit can fathom the human heart. The heart is the place of decision, of truth, of encounter, of covenant.” (Catechism 2563)

“In our MSC schools, no one is a stranger, no one is a foreigner, we are all one in the Heart of Christ.” Jules Chevalier, Le Sacré-Coeur

Inevitably, hopefully, at some point of their Downlands journey, our students will ask, “How can I set about living the unique, authentic, heartfelt life that only I can live - with purpose and passion, grace and generosity, and above all with gratitude and a desire to be of service to others?” 1 . An environment where one’s heart finds a home, and is ‘at home’, is one in which students can comfortably ask this question, and where there is innate understanding that the searching is part of the journey. It is only in a school where a student’s heart feels at home, where there is a shared humanity, where there is a felt concern for the “subjectivity and identity” of each child, that the child will learn the dignity of self and others, and intricately woven with the pursuit of truth and excellence will always be the search for meaning and purpose in life – the “Who am I?” question.

To be able to grow and flourish as people of kindness, compassion, humility, gentleness and courage, both students and adults in our Downlands community must feel at ease, and must experience the school environment as sanctuary, as community, as a place ‘to come home to’

and in which to feel ‘at home’ amid the pace and compelling demands of life. As the saying goes, ‘Home is where the heart is’, a place where one can truly be oneself, and often, this is an intangible place – a feeling, an understanding.

One might say that this feeling, this understanding, this ‘intangible’, flows from our Spirituality of the Heart, which permeates all aspects of life at Downlands and nestles so beautifully with young people’s attraction to recover the sacred and mystical potentials of our faith tradition, and indeed of their true selves. It is this spirituality, well lived, which ensures that our College community is indeed a place ‘where your heart finds a home’- where the heart comes home to itself.

“Heart” - the most common word used in the Bible (over 800 times) to refer to the inner depths of a person … is described as “the essence of a person; in the eyes of God, the heart is the real person.” (Dennis Murphy MSC). At Downlands, we are committed to compassionate acceptance of this “essence”, of every individual, in all their differences, uniqueness, strengths, vulnerabilities and weaknesses. We recognise that only in a place where one’s heart - oneself - is at home, and which is a life-enhancing environment, will growth occur. And it is only in daily creating a place where the hearts of all members of the Downlands community can find a home, a place where all in our community can flourish, that we can be true to our mission as an MSC school.

It is entirely plausible that our young people intuitively know what their hearts need, that their hearts thirst for ‘home’, for a place where there can be the gentle nourishment needed for the development of the whole person, a place of belonging and a place for self -acceptance, as it is self -acceptance which gives one ‘peace of heart’.

This claim is significant, and it calls us to strive to do all we can to ensure that it is one we live authentically. If Catholic schools are increasingly “serv[ing] young people and adults as the face and place of the Church” 2 , then they must be places of becoming, of “learning human” (Les Murray), places full of “signposts showing the young the way to their hearts”. They must be places where the heart feels at home, can find a home and can flourish along the way of the “longest journey anyone will ever make - the journey to one’s heart” 3 .

Downlands is a place where one’s heart can find a home - where students can grow and flourish as they develop a sense of truth, goodness and beauty and so be ready to go out and to make a difference in the world.

“The heart is the mystical core of the person...the deepest part of the person, the essence...the place of profound connection with others and with the universe...the place where body, mind and spirit co-exist, the place of completeness...the centre of our being, the place from which we relate with others most deeply and most closely...the place where we feel most profoundly the joys and the path of life ..the place where we can encounter the Sacred.” 4

The 2019 Dux of the College, Georgia achieved an OP1 and is the recipient of a University of Southern Queensland (USQ) Chancellor's Scholarship. Georgia will soon commence her Bachelor of Biomedical Science degree at USQ. We asked Georgia to share some advice for current students as well as her future hopes and dreams ...

Tell us about your connection with Downlands

I’m a third generation Downlander (my parents and grandfather having attending school here) and so my family was very familiar with the culture and ethos of Downlands, which is one of the primary reasons we chose it as a school. During my years at Downlands I found it easy to make a number of friends across all levels and to be involved in many different aspects of the school. In fact, this became what I regard as one of the school’s most inviting aspects - it’s strong culture of inclusivity. Downlands provided me with a multitude of opportunities through co-curricular options such as netball, volleyball, and numerous other academically and community-aligned groups, as well as a network of people I am able to rely on. I look forward to moving on to Biomedical Science at university, but will always have fond memories of my years at Downlands.

What is your fondest memory of Downlands?

I have many fond memories of Downlands, though what I enjoyed most of all were the bonding opportunities during the Senior retreats. These allowed the Senior year level to know each other at a deeper level, and is one of the contributing factors to the great sense of community at Downlands.

What was your favourite subject and teacher?

My favourite subject and teacher was definitely Biology with Mrs Weller. The content was always very interesting and compelled me to delve further into whichever field or topic we were studying at the time. Mrs Weller was a wonderful teacher, often going above and beyond to provide thorough resources on topics I was interested in or working on, and this is likely one of the factors which led me towards my desired career path of scientific research and medicine.

Area/s of Achievement

One of my proudest academic achievements would have to be Dux of the College. I was really happy to earn that award, especially because there were so many other talented students in our year level. It required a lot of hard work and a few sleepless nights studying but it was really worth it to find what I’m capable of when I put my mind to something.

I played both netball and volleyball in my younger years at Downlands and was in the Belles Firsts Volleyball team for my Senior years. In Year 11, the boys and girls firsts teams were lucky enough to play in a national volleyball competition in Melbourne. This was a great opportunity to test and improve our skills as a team, as well as get to know one another better through living and commuting together for the week. In Year 12, I received the Volleyball Girls Team Leadership Award. I was also involved in several community groups within the school including DIVAS and the Jules Social Justice group; and volunteered in many other roles within the College including as a Year 7/8 buddy, an Open Day tour guide, a dinner service team leader, a school social supervisor, and a senior ‘clown’ for the Junior School Tradition and Spirit Day.

Any philosophies you live by, things have aided your success/es

There are two messages in particular which have resonated with me. These are “Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world”, and “In the middle of difficulty, lies opportunity.” Albert Einstein, widely recognized as one of the greatest minds of all time, said both. To me, the implication of the first is that in order to make true progression in any field, one needs to have a creative vision – a unique way to approach challenges and to test new ideas. The sophisticated medical technologies we have today would have been incomprehensible to those who lived hundreds of years ago. We have reached this point due to the creative vision and dedicated work of many gifted people. The latter message has encouraged me to view the inevitable challenges sure to arise in any course of work not as setbacks, but as opportunities to work on unique solutions through the application of critical and abstract thinking, thereby encouraging a more thorough contemplation of the task at hand from a multitude of angles, serving - when paired with the proper drive - to inevitably improve the end results.

Any advice for seniors?

My advice for Senior students is to remember that although there is a lot of work to focus on in Senior school, not to let themselves get too stressed about it, but to enjoy their final years and to explore as many opportunities as they can.

Tell us about what you’re doing now that you’ve graduated?

Since graduating I have been accepted into a Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences at USQ, and will be completing this as an undergraduate course before hopefully sitting the Gamsat and going into medicine.

Future hopes and dreams – what will you be doing ten years from now?

I hope to eventually work as a rural doctor and perhaps incorporate medical research into my career.
