The Arts at Downlands

The Arts

The Arts at Downlands College is a challenging and rewarding area, one in which students learn more about themselves, their society and the world in which they live.

Downlands College's music, art and drama departments are recognised as being among the finest in Queensland, with numerous awards and medals from notable competitions such as the Toowoomba and Queensland Eisteddfod, State Honours Band and the Creative Generation Excellence in Visual Art and Design Awards.

The College instructs all Year 8 students in the Arts. The foundation unit encompasses all three departments and is designed to give students a taste of the Arts, with particular emphasis on realising their own unique potential through the creation and exploration of pieces of visual and performance art.

Students are encouraged to study Music, Art and/or Drama in the following years. The unit structure of the Junior Curriculum allows students to explore a variety of styles in a wide range of contexts, always challenging them to create and analyse with increasing levels of sophistication.

Outside the classroom, students have many opportunities to develop their talents.

The College offers private instrumental tuition with highly qualified and experienced tutors visiting the school. Music students have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of performing groups, including the College Stage Band, Orchestra, String Ensemble, four Choirs and various ensembles for saxophone, guitar and percussion.
